Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the Minsteracres Retreat Centre along with nine PROPS carers.
We were picked up by minibus at Newcastle Central Station, and upon our arrival, we were all in awe of the stunning drive up to the retreat and the beautiful house that awaited us. We were warmly welcomed and served tea and biscuits in the main entertainment hall, which featured a roaring fire and massive windows that offered breath taking views of the grounds.
Each of our carers was asked to choose from a variety of complementary therapy treatments, including a massage, head and neck treatment, or Reiki energy release. While two carers at a time received their treatments, the rest of us enjoyed a peaceful (though slightly chilly) walk around the grounds. We admired the sheep and relished the sound of birds singing in the crisp morning air.

Afterward, we returned to the house and were invited to spend more time in the entertainment hall, where we were treated to a fascinating history lesson about the house and its evolution over the years.
Just as we grow and change, so has this remarkable house. Following this, we were given a private tour of the beautifully hand-painted building, which took our breath away at every turn. It was truly a privilege to witness the carers’ complete engagement and relaxation in such a serene and captivating environment, an experience I cherished as a Family Intervention Worker with PROPS.

Next, we enjoyed a delightful two-course meal prepared by the house chef. After the meal, we were taken to the sanctuary garden, where we participated in focused activities such as meditation, a sharing circle, and plant pot decoupage.
It was heart warming to see all the carers embrace the opportunities and give themselves the to slow down and take a breath, stepping away from their usual busy routines to enjoy some much-needed relaxation and mindfulness.
Thank you to the team at Minsteracres Retreat Centre in County Durham for welcoming PROPS carers and looking after us.
